Introduction to Cultural Competence: Awareness of Children from diverse backgrounds — including children of color, children in families of lower socioeconomics, and children of marginalized groups are being cared for and educated in our early childhood programs. We know that we need to provide learning experiences that reflect the cultural backgrounds of all children, which includes family values and learning styles. Failure to do this, can compromise the benefit children receive from early childhood programs. This course is a beginning step to preparing the early childhood workforce to increase their awareness and understanding of culture and cultural competence. It focuses on defining culture, understanding cultural conditioning, culturally responsive teaching and the role of engaging families. It is designed to be interactive and self-reflective
